Charles Ashabraner Family Papers

This is a collection of family history notes and letters that were gathered and researched by Charles E Ashabraner. I later transcribed these hanwritten documents, organized them, and annotated my comments in blue type. The original date of this collection probably started sometime in 1920s with updates added as time went on. There were some responces written on the questionnaire letter of which I typed in green.

The first portion of this collection begins with a written inquiry from my grandfather to his mother, Therese (Hasenstab) Ashabraner. There doesn't appear to be any of the usual greetings nor any dates found on any of these letters, but there does appear to be a coresponance between family members.

Dad has spoken of three brothers coming from Va. or W. Va.

Names _______________ _______________ _______________

County of Va. or W. Va. _______________

Staying in Clark County William _______________

Harrison County _______________ _______________

Year _______________

How is Aunt Jane Ashabraner related Dads uncle John's wife._______

Does Dad know his mothers maiden name _______________

Anything of his grandparents. Names - Where from - Year they came to U.S. or any dates (years) at all.

If he knows any dates or from where they came and maybe the year I would write that county and they could tell any records of births and marriages or even by directories or ?????? of that time. Would my birth certificate tell anything No only parents name or your marriage license No. Mine had a ton of history on it here. All I knew and could guess.

Did grandma Hasenstab have only one brother - Wm. How is Leonard Hasenstab the tailor on Market St. related. Your father's brothers child? How many brothers and sisters did your father have 2 bro. John, Philip 1 sister Eva. Anything known of grandpa Hasenstab's family. Where does the name Beck come in? _______________ Uncle Phil spoke of Becks in the relation.
This may seem silly or foolish but its fun and interesting and I only want to get it if I can see how far back ???????? ???????. Would Uncle George Ash. know I wonder.

I believe the next three family history passages were written to my grandfather, Charles E. Ashabraner, by his mother, Theresa (Hasenstab) Ashabraner, in response to his inquiry about his heritage.

Hasenstab & Koch History:

Grandma Hasenstab only had 1 bro. Wm [Koch]. Leonard Hasenstab the tailor, was on Market St. now on Spring before East 4th & 5th where a resturant used to be, Northside St., and his brother John Hasenstab on Bank St., and Mrs. Hugh (Bertha) Gordon on Shelby St. are children of Grandpa Hasenstab's brother John. Their mother and Grandma H. were also 1st cousins. Leonard, John & Bertha's mother's mother was a sister of my mother's father (Koch). That makes them 1st & 3rd cousins. My father had 2 brothers and 1 sister, a brother John as mentioned above, 1 bro. Philip lived in Southbend Ind. and he and wife died there years ago. They have 1 son did live there they had twin boys 1 named Richard don't remember the others name. 1 died and 1 was still living the last we heard 1 daughter Maeta (I think is the way she spells it.) was still living. My bro. Philip was named for this uncle and he and aunt Maeta gave him the dress & skirt he was christened in. Aunt Frances and I could not find a Beck in the relation. It may be my fathers first wife was named "Beck" my father was a widower and had a little babe when my mother married him. Baby's name was Conrad Hasenstab died in New York.
My father had 1 sister Eva Hasenstab she died single. She was a very religeous woman. I still have a little picture she sent me when I was small. Don't remember when she died in N.Y. maybe Germany Uncle Philip may know. A sentance appears to have been written in a small gap between paragraphs. It appears to be a notation that my grandfather could added to answer the paragraph above. [Died in Germany - Uncle Philip saw her grave in August 1889.]

Mainaschaff is a small town or burg right close [an hours walk - 4 miles] to Aschaffenburg, it is not shown on map, just a small place. Aunt Frances says a little village. [about 400 inhaitants] Aunt Frances said she don't think any of my uncle William's children are named Beck she has some letters from them and will look them up. They wrote to Grandma H. when their father died and aunt Frances wrote them after our mother died. The notation in brackets appears to be in the same writing style as the sentance above. This information may have been added after my grandfather spoke to Philip Hasenstab.

  • Uncle Geo W. Ashabraner's address is 624 Park Ave., Louisville, KY.
  • Willies address is or was 76 N. 19th St., Kenmore, OH.
  • My grandfather Hasenstab name was Joseph Hasenstab.

Ashabraner History:

Dad's greatgrandfather was Joseph Ashabraner his great uncles David, (Joseph), Abraham, John, and Jacob. 5 great uncles came here from South Carolina don't know what town, when boys were young men. Dad's father was a son of Joseph Asharaner Jr. Dad's grandmother's maiden name was (Gullett) Dad's father had 1 bro. John Ashabraner was aunt Jane Ashabraner's husband, 1 sister Mrs. Mary Miller, mother of cousin Jake, Lillie Smith and their bro. & sisters, 1 sister Rachael Ashabraner she was drowned when about 2 or 3 years old.

Dad's father William H. Ashabraner Born June 19, 1832 Died Nov. 27, 1895.

Dad's brother William died when 19 years old his sister Fannie died in Fla. (Miama) and left 2 boys knows no more about them. Aunt sis died here Feb. 4, 1917 and uncle George still in Louisville - He had 2 boys Joseph, and Charles. Joseph died about 18 years ago. Uncle Sis Williams left 6 children, Samuel, Fannie, Anna, Sadie, A;ice, Lorena.

Turner History:

Dad's mother's name was Mary Elizabeth Turner. She had 3 brothers Joseph, George, and Silas Turner 3 sisters Mattie, she died a maiden, Mrs. Fannie (Geo.) McClintock you may or ought to remember her she lived on Cor. E. 10th & Spring she is dead and Mrs. Sarah Clipper Zimmerman, you may remember her she died a few years about 4 years ago. Her last husband was Charles Zimmerman's father. She owned and lived in her home on Oak St. above Jay.

Dad's mother had 3 brothers Joseph was killed by Monon years ago. George was killed by Monon in Sept. 1901 on first day of school he was bringing the children to school. Silas Turner still lives in Louisville 3023 South 3rd St. Telephone Magnolia 1753.

Dad's mother died June 19, 1875 she was about 2 years older than dad's father.

You remember dad's uncle Geo.Clipper was found dead in chair he got up and started fire and sat down by it and died. Aunt Sarah found him dead (when we were in business on Spring St. on Dec. 24).

Dad's mother had another bro. don't know his name.

The following section was reorganized to accomodate this story format. The original documents consisted of separate pages of birth, marriage, and death tables and also two relational tree charts. These relational tree charts may have been constructed by my grandfather in order to understand the information he gathered.

[1]

Children of Joseph & ? Ashabraner: 5 brothers migrated to Clark, Floyd, & Harrison Counties of Indiana when they were young men. Origin was either South Carolina or Pennsylvania. When I first looked at my grandfather's relational tree chart of the Ashabraner family I was surprised to see how closely it resembled my research of this branch of Ashabraners in Indiana. This had secured the direction of my research and helped me distinguish some of the family relationships.
